Fantastic biography of Aretha’s father, the legendary preacher C. L. Franklin. Everyone knows how Aretha is the “Queen of Soul” but her father was similarly at the top of the preaching game. In addition to showing where Aretha came from, the book also speaks more generally of the gospel culture to which most music today owes something to. Issues of race relations and segregation before the Civil Rights Era are also implicit in every page.
